I often tell couples that their decision to have a blessing with family and friends through a wedding ceremony is both fortunate and unfortunate.
Unfortunate because it is still not legally recognized here and not yet socially accepted.
It is fortunate because, even though the couple may have simply decided and planned it for themselves, whether we like it or not, weddings of LGBTQI+ couples is a form of advocacy and resistance against an intolerant society; that their Union is more and beyond them. Its meaning and implications are profound. The impact and influence ripples and echos beyond what the couple can imagine, especially Unions that are made public and open to all when videos or photos are shared in social media for the world to see.
Certainly there would be intolerant and arrogant bigots who will respond with hatred but there would be countless others who would be supportive; many strangers would be inspired and many more would be opened-up to try to understand. Lastly, there are countless unknown LGBTQI+ young people whose lives would be encouraged and saved when they see that our love is possible.
Our relationships and their public declaration will always be inevitably tied to our advocacy and ministry for a just and equal world.
Our love when it takes courage, impacts the world.
