On PH Congress’ Online Poll for Same-Sex Civil Union

Lesbian or gay wedding in Metro Manila

1. Civil Union is not Marriage and we should NOT accept anything less than equal rights both in law and in the language of the law.

2. Our rights, dignity and lives are not determined by polls. Regardless of public opinion our rights remain. YET we recognize the power of public opinion to sway legislation as well as a gauge on the amount of grass roots work we all need to do to change society.

3. Whether we participate in the suspicious and problematic poll or not, one thing is for sure: that rights are fought in a protracted struggle outside of Social Media and beyond polls.

4. Let us be realistic with our expectation and face current reality, that majority of Filipinos are not yet educated and fully aware about
Sexuality and Gender Identity and this certainly affects their attitude and support for LGBTQI+ rights. How many even know and understand basic human rights? Much is needed to be done by advocates and activists in the area of education.

5. Marriage is not the End Goal – the end goal is social justice for all sectors and minorities.
Even if Marriage equality passes into law, the work of changing hearts and minds, and dismantling systems of oppression will continue.
