Pope Francis clearly states that same-sex couples should be protected by civil union laws, in a new documentary “Francesco” by Oscar-nominated director Evgeny Afineevsky that was recently released.
“Homosexual people have a right to be in a family. They are children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable over it,” the Pope said. “What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered. I stood up for that,” he adds.
The pope might be referring to the time he was the archbishop of Buenos Aires and opposed legislation to approve same-sex marriages but supported some kind of legal protection for the rights of gay couples.
According to the Catholic Church’s doctrine, homosexual tendencies are not sinful but homosexual acts are. However, their doctrine teaches that homosexuals should be treated with dignity and respect.
While Open Table Metropolitan Community Church will always stand for MARRIAGE EQUALITY, we welcome this clear and major pronouncement by Pope Francis regarding civil union law for same sex couples.
